Patrick George Troughton, 25 Mart 1920 tarihinde Mill Hill, Middlesex, İngiltere'de dünyaya gelmiştir. Bir avukatın oğlu olan Troughton, Mill Hill School'da eğitim gördükten sonra oyunculuk eğitimi almak üzere New York'taki Tonbridge School'a gitmiştir. Ancak II. Dünya Savaşı'nın patlak vermesiyle ülkesine dönen Troughton, Kraliyet Donanması'na (Royal Navy) katılmış ve savaş boyunca Kuzey Denizi konvoylarında görev yaparak üstün hizmet madalyaları kazanmıştır.
